PHOENIX, Nov. 24, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Football fans who are planning a trip to the upcoming Super Bowl better make sure they've got a little extra disposable income handy. Scheduled to be played on February 1, 2015 at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, the big game is sending lodging prices sky high in the greater Phoenix area. According to a survey from CheapHotels.org, hotels there are, on average, more than quadrupling their rates.
At the moment, only around 10% of the hotels in the greater Phoenix region are still offering available rooms for the Super Bowl weekend of January 30 to February 2. These are essentially budget hotels, as virtually all 4- and 5-star hotels are already sold out.
On average, these available hotels are charging 345% more than usual, according to the survey. Some hotels are increasing their rates a lot more, though. The Hotel 502 is one such example. Located a couple of miles from downtown Phoenix, this accommodation is charging $750 for a double room over the Super Bowl weekend. That's an increase of 743% over its normal price.
The biggest price gouger, however, is the Gaslight Inn. Located in the historic center of old town Glendale, this bed and breakfast is charging $1200 per night for a king room during the Super Bowl weekend. That figure represents a hike of over 900% compared to regular rates.
For the cheapest available double room, Super Bowl goers will currently have to spend $170 per night. For that price they'll be able to lodge in a budget hotel close to the Phoenix Airport. For more centrally located hotels, however, they can expect to spend at least $250 per night.
For diehard football fanatics who are on a tight budget, a few motels are still offering rooms for less than $100 per night. However, considering the very poor client evaluations of these accommodations, they cannot be seriously recommended.
