Hortau expands irrigation management technology in High Plains, Southwest
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif., April 6, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Hortau, a provider of precision irrigation management systems and services for agriculture since 2002, is expanding its full line of products and services in the High Plains and Southwest regions of the U.S.
Earlier this month, Hortau announced its expansion into the Pacific Northwest, and is now bulking up its existing presence in the High Plains and moving into the Southwest.
Hortau's smart irrigation management platform reports to growers how crops are faring in real time – before stresses such as drought or lack of aeration can have a negative impact. This proprietary, plant-centric approach measures crop stress using soil tension, ensuring optimal growth, and reducing water and energy consumption, as well as environmental impacts such as leaching.
High Plains Regional Manager Doug Larson said the expansion will help provide precision irrigation solutions to a region that has been plagued by water issues stemming from the depletion of the Ogallala Aquifer.
"We're excited about expanding our presence here and in the Southwest, helping growers better manage water use in what is becoming a parched region of the country," Larson said. "We've already seen the effects of smart irrigation management first hand, reading soil tension levels in real time and applying water based on what a crop needs. For many growers, that not only takes the guesswork out of irrigation management, but reduces water and energy use, and improves overall crop health."
Hortau's High Plains and Southwest regional sales and grower support efforts will be expanded thanks to the addition of:
- Jason Cogan: Supporting the Kansas region, Cogan grew up in south-central Kansas and is a graduate of Kansas State University, where he received a degree in Animal Science. Previously, he worked with a farmers cooperative, assisting farmers in various capacities, from fertilizer and production recommendations, to sales and service.
- Kyle Hagerty: Supporting Northeast Colorado, Eastern Wyoming and Western Nebraska, Hagerty grew up on small farm in Oregon and earned a degree in Rangeland Ecology from the University of Wyoming. A Certified Crop Advisor (CCA), Hagerty worked as an agronomist in the Colorado High Plains for 12 years, honing his skills and expertise in soils, water, pest, fertilizer and crop management.
- John Nevill: Supporting the Texas and New Mexico regions, Nevill is a retired firefighter Captain and former member of the Texas Incident Management Team. Previously, Nevill owned and operated a commercial applicator business that helped growers develop soil, plant health and pest management programs. For 10 years, he held his commercial applicators license from the Texas Department of Agriculture and worked with local leaders and extension agents to monitor seasonal and regional conditions that affected soil, plant and tree health.
