BALTIMORE, Oct. 2, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Hopkins Medical products announced the release of its Newborn & Mom pulse oximeter kit.  The dual-use adult fingertip oximeter has an additional port to attach the Hopkins newborn y-probe sensor for infant pulse oximetry screening.  This innovative two in one device serves as an adult and neonatal oximeter.  The kit also contains a carrying case, alcohol wipes and Hopkins Pulse Oximeter Wraps to secure the y-probe to the patient.  The Hopkins Newborn & Mom pulse oximeter kit is ideal for those looking for a cost effective, accurate and portable way to perform newborn pulse oximetry screenings outside of the hospital setting.

Neonatal pulse oximetry screening has become an import test care providers can use to screen for critical congenital heart defects (CCHDs).  According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), approximately 4,800 babies are born in the United States every year that have one of seven different CCHDs.  Critical congenital heart defects account for nearly 3% of infant mortality during the first year of life and affects between seven and nine of every 1000 newborns.  Detecting CCHDs early and implementing surgical correction can be lifesaving and can prevent or limit brain damage.  United States Health and Human Services Secretary, Kathleen Sebelius, acknowledged the importance of infant pulse oximetry screening when she endorsed adding the screening for CCHDs to the Uniform Screening Panel in September of 2011.
