Honeywell's Low-Global-Warming Potential Performance Fluid Approved By U.S. Environmental Protection Agency For Use As Aerosol Solvent
Solstice™ Performance Fluid Provides Non-Flammable Solution for Critical Cleaning Applications
MORRIS TOWNSHIP, N.J., Sept. 24, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Honeywell (NYSE: HON) announced today the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has approved Honeywell's new low-global-warming-potential Solstice™ Performance Fluid (PF) for use in aerosol solvent applications.
"The availability of Solstice PF as an aerosol solvent, and Honeywell's low-global-warming-potential Solstice Propellant, means that manufacturers and marketers of aerosol solvents now have the ability to formulate high-performing and very environmentally-preferable products," said Pamela Schechter, business director, Industrial Products for Honeywell Fluorine Products. "This pairing of materials boosts performance and reduces environmental impact dramatically. We look forward to working with aerosol fillers and the industries that depend on these formulations for cleaning critical parts to help improve their environmental performance."
The EPA gave final approval under its Significant New Alternatives Policy (SNAP) program.
Solstice PF has a global-warming-potential of less than 5, significantly lower than many of the solvents it replaces, providing a sustainable solution that is also cost-effective. Solstice PF is non-flammable, and expected to be classified as a non-volatile organic chemical in the U.S. It is also compatible with many commonly used plastics and elastomers, and is both thermally and hydrolytically stable.
In addition to Solstice Performance Fluid, Honeywell's family of Solstice-branded products includes stationary and mobile refrigerants, gaseous and liquid blowing agents, and propellants based on Honeywell's new hydrofluoro-olefin technology that helps customers lower their carbon footprint without sacrificing end-product performance.
The products have been developed and are being commercialized by Honeywell's Fluorine Products business, a leader in the manufacture and supply of zero ozone-depleting refrigerants used by top air-conditioning and refrigeration makers worldwide, and blowing agents for energy-efficient foam insulation, as well as hydrofluoric acid and precursors for nuclear fuel.
Honeywell Performance Materials and Technologies is a global leader in developing and manufacturing advanced materials and process technologies. These materials and technologies are used by people every day in a wide range of industries and applications, from petroleum refining to environmentally friendlier refrigerants to bullet-resistant vests.
