Honeywell's Dan Sheflin Named Chairman of Federal Smart Grid Advisory Committee
Committee Appointment Builds on Honeywell Expertise in Bringing Smart Grid Benefits to Homeowners and Businesses
MINNEAPOLIS, Sept. 28 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Honeywell (NYSE: HON) announced today that Dan Sheflin, Vice President and Chief Technology Officer for Honeywell Automation and Control Solutions (ACS), has been named Chairman of the Smart Grid Advisory Committee of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). NIST is the federal organization with primary responsibility to coordinate the development of protocols and standards for the development of the Smart Grid.
The committee is composed of representatives from U.S. industry, academia, trade and professional organizations. It will advise NIST Director Patrick Gallagher on the direction of NIST Smart Grid-related programs and activities and help the agency maximize its technical contributions to modernizing and securing the U.S. electric power grid.
As Vice President and Chief Technology Officer for ACS, Sheflin is responsible for leading ACS's global research and development programs, defining essential technology initiatives to drive growth for Honeywell, including strategic energy efficiency and smart grid initiatives.
"The Smart Grid presents an enormous opportunity to improve energy efficiency, and provide a more stable and secure electrical system," Sheflin said. "Establishing the proper open standards and protocols will increase innovation and accelerate the development of this important asset."
Sheflin's appointment builds on Honeywell's growing Smart Grid expertise and capability. The company has energy and environmental controls in more than 150 million homes, 10 million buildings and thousands of industrial facilities around the world. It also has decades of experience working with utilities and their customers to lower energy consumption and costs. Honeywell is merging these capabilities to develop technology and services that empower end users to transition to a smart grid with minimal effort and maximum savings. As part of that effort the company recently:
- Acquired E-Mon, an industry leader in sub-metering technology for commercial enterprises; and Akuacom, which manufactures technology to automate demand response programs for commercial and industrial enterprises;
- Won a Smart Grid Investment Grant (SGIG) from the U.S. Department of Energy to support a critical peak pricing response program for commercial and industrial customers in Southern California;
- Received American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) grants for the research and development of technology that ties into the Smart Grid, including a program to help reduce down-time and failures for wind turbines;
- Selected by US Department of Energy for an award to research, develop and commercialize a "role based access control" system for improving cyber-security of smart grid and other critical infrastructures;
- Introduced time-of-use programming to its Prestige™ thermostat, enabling homeowners to automatically adjust energy use based on electricity prices.
Overall, more than 50% of Honeywell's product portfolio is tied to energy efficiency. The company estimates the U.S. could reduce energy consumption 15-20% by immediately and comprehensively adopting existing Honeywell technologies and solutions.
