SAN DIEGO and MINNEAPOLIS, June 25, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Honeywell (NYSE: HON) is hosting its fifth annual Green Boot Camp this week in San Diego. In addition to providing curriculum for the classroom, Green Boot Camp gives teachers the tools to inspire their students to be more environmentally conscious, and heighten their interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) careers.
Honeywell is working with a number of San Diego-based organizations to help educate the teachers — including San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) and the California Center for Sustainable Energy — capitalizing on each organization's unique knowledge of energy and sustainability.
"Green Boot Camp gives us the rare opportunity to collaborate with fellow educators from around the world and organizations that understand the importance of sustainable practices," said Laurel Owen, a teacher at Challenger Middle School in San Diego. "Understanding how to be more sustainable and green is important, and I plan to apply what I learn to inspire my students to be more environmentally aware."
Along with instruction from a variety of eco-focused experts, the teachers will construct a rain-barrel irrigation system at Bayside Community Center to collect rain water for the community gardens on site. They will also build a greenhouse, add native plants and mulch the gardens.
Attendees also will design and build wind turbines, and take a guided tour of Balboa Park to learn how sustainability practices are shaping the facility and how LEED practices are informing preparations for the park's 2015 centennial celebration.
"The importance of teaching sustainability is not unique to just one country. Environmental challenges are becoming a global concern and teaching today's children through science, technology, engineering and mathematics can inspire them to change their behaviors and pursue careers in this field that could potentially make a global impact," said Paul Thomason, secondary school teacher in Scotland's Shetland Islands Council schools.
Green Boot Camp is sponsored by Honeywell and was created as part of an environmental initiative of Honeywell Hometown Solutions, the company's global corporate citizenship initiative. Hometown Solutions focuses on five areas of vital importance: science and math education; family safety and security; housing and shelter; humanitarian relief; and habitat and conservation.
"Collaboration is needed to make significant, lasting sustainable contributions," said Paul Orzeske, president of Honeywell Building Solutions. "Green Boot Camp embodies this spirit by providing a unique experience for teachers to work together and share ideas on how to best impact classrooms around the world."
