Honeywell Earns Highest CMMI Rating For Software And Development Process Maturity
- Only 6 Percent of More Than 6,000 Organizations Appraised Reach CMMI Maturity Level 5
- Up to 25% Improvement in Solution Development Cycle Time
- More Than Half of Honeywell's 20,000 Engineers Are Focused on Software Development
MINNEAPOLIS, March 4, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Honeywell (NYSE:HON) today announced that its Building Solutions (HBS) and Process Solutions (HPS) businesses have been appraised at Maturity Level 5 of Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI), the highest and most prestigious level of global recognition in software development that a company can achieve. About 6 percent of the more than 6,000 organizations with published appraisals results have achieved this status.
CMMI is a process improvement appraisal framework administered by the CMMI Institute to determine the maturity of an organization's software and development processes. By reaching CMMI Maturity Level 5, Honeywell's Building and Process Solutions businesses have shown superior and well-defined, standardized software development processes. Honeywell's longstanding commitment to Six Sigma and continuous process improvement provides the culture, tools, methodologies and skills to enable the development and use of high-maturity practices for software development.
"To be appraised at Maturity Level 5 is a significant accomplishment that few companies have achieved," said Dan Sheflin, chief technology officer, Honeywell Automation and Control Solutions. "The CMMI rating is the highest form of third-party validation that we can receive in software development, and our rigorous processes have led to as much as a 25% improvement in development cycle time for complex software projects. We are honored to achieve this recognition."
Avnet Services, based in Phoenix, performed the appraisal of a variety of projects including Honeywell Experion® Process Knowledge System, used in oil refineries and manufacturing facilities, and Honeywell Enterprise Buildings Integrator, used to bring together existing building systems, providing seamless digital information and control across all building operational management systems. The company evaluated the projects over a two-week period and identified key strengths in systematic monitoring of the project status resulting in sustained product integrity, interactions with stakeholders throughout the development process to ensure the understanding of business and product requirements, and early mitigation of technical risks that has improved development cycle time and product quality.
"There are proven linkages between higher CMMI maturity and improved product development and business results," said Rolf Reitzig, senior business unit director-software engineering for Avnet Services. "Achieving CMMI Maturity Level 5 clearly demonstrates Honeywell is committed to developing high-quality products for its customers."
Honeywell employs more than 20,000 engineers worldwide, half of whom are focused on developing software offerings that make the world safer and more secure, more comfortable and energy efficient, more innovative and productive.
