TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras, Nov. 29, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, the government of the Republic of Honduras thanked a number of domestic and international organizations for recognizing the transparency with which its national election was conducted this past Sunday, November 26.
The government cited reports from the European Parliament, the United Nations, and the Honduran Council for Private Enterprise on the peaceful, free, and fair nature of the election.
In a statement, the European Union Electoral Observation Mission in Honduras concluded that "election day was peaceful and calm" and "vote counting was transparent." The Mission said that Honduras's "new Law on Clean Politics constitutes a significant improvement to the legal framework for elections."
The United Nations in Honduras also issued a statement congratulating the Honduran people for the "high level of participation, citizenship, and commitment to democracy shown during election day on November 26." UN officials asked the Honduran people to "maintain a peaceful and constructive attitude" while awaiting the Supreme Electoral Tribunal's final tally of the vote.
In a separate statement, the non-profit Honduran Council for Private Enterprise, or COHEP, called on the country's political leaders to "recognize the results as expressed by the Honduran people at the polls, based on the official declaration of the Supreme Electoral Tribunal."
More than 16,000 domestic and international observers were present in Honduras to monitor the election, making it the most observed election in Honduran history.
According to Supreme Electoral Tribunal President David Matamoros Batson, all ballots have now been delivered to the Tribunal's headquarters in Tegucigalpa. Matamoros said that every vote will be counted before the final results are announced.
