Honduran President: We Will Respect the Electoral "Objection Period"

TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras, Dec. 6, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- On Monday, Honduras's Supreme Electoral Tribunal, or TSE, finished counting all ballots cast in the country's November 26 presidential election.

The Embassy of the United States in Honduras, the European Union and the Organization of American States recognized the closure of the vote count -- and called on the political parties of President Juan Orlando Hernández and Salvador Nasralla to continue with the legal process in place that allows political parties to request any recounts of the voting ballots they feel are necessary.

In response, President Juan Orlando Hernández issued the following statement:

"I am proud of the Honduran people for peacefully going to the polls on November 26, and I thank the observers from the European Union and the Organization of American States for helping Honduras administer a free and fair election. We welcome recommendations from the international electoral observers.

"I am also fully committed to the rule of law. Consequently, I will respect and support any challenges to the TSE's results permitted by Honduran law. I pledge to do all in my power to ensure that the will of the Honduran people prevails in this election. This country belongs to all of us.

"I am confident that we will make it through this trying time and resume our work toward creating a better and safer Honduras."
