TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras, Nov. 27, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Last night, Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández celebrated his re-election before a crowd of supporters, citing exit polls from domestic and international independent pollsters that named him the winner. Hernández is the first president to be re-elected in Honduran history.
President Hernández issued the following statement:
"I am grateful to the Honduran people for entrusting me to lead our great nation for four more years. This victory reaffirms that we have led Honduras along the right path for the past four years. But our work is not complete. I call upon all political parties, and my fellow citizens, to set aside their differences and work together to secure a prosperous future for our country.
"The election is now over, and I implore the Honduran people to unite as brothers and sisters to build an equitable homeland that offers justice to all.
"We have accomplished many things that seemed impossible just a few years ago. We have made great strides improving domestic security, fighting transnational gangs and organized crime, and improving our nation's credit rating. Domestic and foreign investors now believe in Honduras.
"We will build upon our successes and secure new victories for our people, by creating jobs and growing our economy.
"I want to thank the domestic and international observers of our election, including representatives from the Organization of American States, the European Union, and former heads of state from all over the world. We appreciate their efforts, which have helped ensure that our election has been transparent, trustworthy, and tranquil.
"I also want to thank my party and its many workers and volunteers for their tireless efforts over the past several weeks, which have led us to this great victory. Most importantly, I want to thank the Honduran people, who have given the world a lesson in civics and patriotism.
"Today, I renew my undying commitment to the people of Honduras. I will continue to work tirelessly for this nation and its well-being. Thank you, and God bless you all."
During his victory speech, President Hernández said that he had received calls from several foreign leaders and is expecting additional calls from presidents in Latin America and other parts of the world.
The president celebrated his victory alongside his wife and children, as well as vice-presidential and congressional candidates.
