Honduran President Announces Priorities for U.N. General Assembly

NEW YORK, Sept. 21, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- This week, prior to the 72nd Session of the United Nations General Assembly, Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández called on the body to become more flexible in its dealings with member nations.

"Honduras favors measures that would make the United Nations more responsive and less bureaucratic," President Hernández said. He went on to explain that the U.N. would benefit from using resources more efficiently. 

"Our foreign minister, María Dolores Agüero, is a key proponent of U.N. reform," said President Hernández.

The president also called on the General Assembly to take action to fight climate change. "We plan to address climate change the same way we have tackled poverty and national security problems -- with regional commitment and international support," Hernández said.

"We can no longer ignore the reality of climate change."

Hernández also said that terrorism is "a huge concern for Honduras." He expressed concern that terrorist networks in Europe and North America could infiltrate Latin America. 

"We must work with the international community on this issue," said Hernández.

Lastly, President Hernández lauded Honduras's employment zones. He noted that his country had analyzed similar free trade zones in Singapore and Korea for nearly a decade. The president emphasized that the residents of Honduras's employment zones will exercise full autonomy in managing their fiscal policy, security, investments, and conflict resolution.

"These zones will strengthen Honduras's economy, and help our nation attract investors," Hernández said.
