Honda will present Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin with a new 2015 Honda Accord on Monday, Feb. 9, at 12:30 p.m. at Bill Page Honda in Falls Church, Va.
The title sponsor for both the 2015 Honda NHL All-Star Skills Competition™ and 2015 Honda NHL® All-Star Game, Honda decided to give Ovechkin the vehicle after learning that his widely publicized pleas for the vehicle during the NHL All-Star Weekend were on behalf of the charities he supports.
Following the presentation of the keys, Ovechkin will announce special plans for the vehicle to further assist the American Special Hockey Association (ASHA) and its programs in the Washington, D.C. region.
Inspired by his relationship with 10-year-old Washington Ice Dogs player Ann Schaab, Ovechkin announced his plans to donate the car to ASHA during the National Hockey League's 2015 NHL All-Star Weekend, Jan. 24-25 in Columbus, Ohio. Ovechkin met Schaab during a special session with 60 players from ASHA and granted her request for a sushi date following the team's Oct. 5 preseason game.
Created in 2000 for players with developmental disabilities, ASHA gives people of all ages and abilities a chance to learn and grow by playing hockey. There are currently more than 50 ASHA programs in 30 cities throughout the United States.
For Ovechkin, the skating session marked the first of many community initiatives he supports throughout the season. In 2006, Ovechkin created Ovi's Crazy 8s, a program through which he purchases and donates Capitals season tickets to Most Valuable Kids, allowing fans who normally wouldn't have access to tickets to attend games. Additionally, Ovechkin supports organizations working with children to grant wishes, having most recently granted the wish of eight-year-old Norwalk, Conn. native Lauren Santora Dec. 12-13.
Video footage of the wish and his date with Anna Schaab are available on MonumentalNetwork.com.
