"We wanted our 10-year celebration to be really specific to our members and our city," said Richard Jones, CEO of Essence Healthcare. "The support and loyalty of the St. Louis community has taken us from a small, local startup to one the largest and highest-rated Medicare plans in the area, now serving over 40,000 St. Louis-area seniors. We view those seniors as precious assets to our local community. That's why we consider what we do so important. We know the people we care for are important."
With that in mind, Essence did some math. It looked at its total membership, multiplied that by the average age of its members, and found that those members represent more than 2.7 million collective years on this earth.
"That's a lot of years, a lot of wisdom and a lot of important things to share with the people of St. Louis," said Jones.
Essence asked its members to share important lessons learned. More than 100 nuggets of wisdom were then illustrated by local children and published in a book, "Life Lessons: 2.7 Million Years of Wisdom from 1 Generation of St. Louisans."
To celebrate the book's launch, Essence will host an event at the Missouri Botanical Garden on Grandparents Day, Sunday, September 7. The event is open to the public and will include fun, free activities. The book will also be available for purchase. All proceeds from the book's sale benefit the Missouri Botanical Garden.
"We find it so fitting that the Botanical Garden house this event," said Bob Herleth, Executive Vice President at the Garden. "We truly are a multigenerational location, and we love that our grounds are considered a St. Louis gem where families can come and enjoy a beautiful day together. As a local company, Essence was able to see the value in what we offer the community."
