The Build Brigade begins with a ceremony Friday, August 10 at 8:30 a.m. Following the opening event, the veteran and family members, HFOT representatives, and selected invited guests will work together to raise the home's first wall. The goal of the two-day build is to frame, side, and roof the house and install windows and doors. Interior and finishing work will be completed in the following months. The home will provide Hayes with maximum freedom of movement and the ability to live more independently.
While on his fourth deployment, Hayes suffered the loss of both his legs and suffered life-threatening injuries after stepping on an IED in Sangin, Afghanistan on December 28, 2010. He looks forward to recovering in a home built to accommodate his needs, providing him with more freedom and independence.
"Despite the daily challenges I face, I know my home will not be an obstacle in my recovery," said Hayes. "Thank you for ensuring my family's livelihood by providing us with this gift."
