The Build Brigade begins with a ceremony Friday, July 27 at 8:30 a.m. Following the opening event, volunteers will work together to raise the home's first wall. The goal of the two-day build is to frame, side, and roof the house and install windows and doors. Interior and finishing work will be completed in the following months. The home will provide Schaus with maximum freedom of movement and the ability to live more independently.
While on his second deployment, Marine Corporal Paul Schaus was left a double amputee after stepping on a landmine during a firefight with insurgents in Helmand Province, Afghanistan on June 5, 2009. He looks forward to recovering in a home built to accommodate his needs, providing him with more freedom and independence.
"You think that people like me are the heroes, but it's people like you who keep our men and women going," said Schaus. "Just knowing that you care about us, not only while we are over there but when we come home, is huge ... thank you."
