The Build Brigade begins with a ceremony Friday, May 11 at 8:30 a.m. Following the opening event, volunteers will work together to raise the home's first wall. The goal of the three-day build is to frame, side, and roof the house and install windows and doors. Interior and finishing work will be completed in the following months. The home will provide Orchowski with maximum freedom of movement and the ability to live more independently.
Orchowski was on his first deployment when he was left a quadriplegic after being thrown from the gunner's hatch of a vehicle that was hit during an insurgents' attack. Orchowski later underwent surgery that miraculously un-pinched the spinal cord and reconnected nerve pathways, and is now diagnosed with Incomplete Quadriplegia. He looks forward to recovering in a home built to accommodate his needs to help him become more independent.
Said Orchowski, "Thank you for your support and kindness, not only have you honored me as a veteran of combat, but you have also changed my family's lives as well."
