The Build Brigade begins with a ceremony Friday, June 15 at 8:30 a.m. Following the opening event, volunteers will work together to raise the home's first wall. The goal of the three-day build is to frame, side, and roof the house and install windows and doors. Interior and finishing work will be completed in the following months. The home will provide Pierce with maximum freedom of movement and the ability to live more independently.
Pierce was on his third deployment when he was left paralyzed after his vehicle drove over a 300 pound bomb in Helmand Province, Afghanistan on January 9th, 2010.
Pierce said he is looking forward to living in a specially adapted home where he can use his wheelchair without worrying about not being able to access all areas independently. His current apartment is not wheelchair accessible and it is difficult to do even the simplest of things like laundry or making coffee.
