ELIZABETH, Colo., June 25, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Homes for Our Troops (www.homesforourtroops.org), a national non-profit organization dedicated to building specially adapted homes for severely injured veterans, will hold a three-day build brigade in Elizabeth, CO, on June 29 – July 1, to begin construction of a home for Army Staff Sergeant Brian Schar.
The Build Brigade begins with a ceremony Friday, June 29 at 8:30 a.m. Following the opening event, volunteers will work together to raise the home's first wall. The goal of the three-day build is to frame, side, and roof the house and install windows and doors. Interior and finishing work will be completed in the following months. The home will provide Schar with maximum freedom of movement and the ability to live more independently.
Army Staff Sergeant Brian Schar was on his third deployment when he lost both of his legs above the knees and suffered nerve damage to his left arm when an Explosively Formed Penetrator was fired at his vehicle in Baghdad, Iraq on September 19, 2007. He looks forward to recovering in a home built to accommodate his needs, providing him with more freedom and independence.
"Thank you for giving me the chance to get back to having a normal life. I am so grateful for your assistance. This home will make a huge difference in my quality of life and I cannot thank you enough," said Schar.
