Homes For Our Troops to award specially adapted custom home to injured Sailor in Mullica Hill, N.J.
MULLICA HILL, N.J., July 10, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The national nonprofit organization, Homes For Our Troops (HFOT) will award a home to Navy PO2 Timothy Birckhead on Monday, July 17, 2017. Shuttles will transport attendees to the home site from Clearview Regional High School, 625 Breakneck Road, Mullica Hill, N.J. beginning at 2:15 p.m. The ceremony will start at 3 p.m.
ABC's The View will be filming this event. Attendees are encouraged to bring friends and family to support PO2 Birckhead on his special day. Dinner will be served to everyone and a public home tour will be conducted by 6 p.m.
Timothy enlisted in the Navy shortly after graduating from high school in 2000. After serving three years and sailing overseas on the USS Iwo Jima as an air-launched weapons technician, Timothy knew he had found a career he loved, and extended his tour of duty. However, during his second tour in 2006, Timothy began experiencing pain and weakness in his legs, making walking and running difficult. This caused him to leave the Navy in 2007. In October 2009, doctors diagnosed Timothy with Hereditary Neuropathy with Liability to Pressure Palsies (HNPP), a condition that affects the sensory and motor nerves. Timothy's case is progressive, and he now has increasing weakness and atrophy in his limbs.
Timothy's new home features more than 40 major special adaptations such as widened doorways for wheelchair access, a roll-in shower, and kitchen amenities that include pull-down shelving and lowered countertops. The home will also alleviate the mobility and safety issues associated with a traditional home, including navigating a wheelchair through narrow hallways or over thresholds, riding on carpets, or reaching for cabinets that are too high. All costs for the home will be covered by Homes For Our Troops and its network of donors, supporters and corporate partners.
HFOT will donate the home to Timothy, thanks to contributions from donors, supporters, and corporate partners. Currently, there are more than 80 active projects in need of funding to complete. To find out more on how to get involved or make a donation visit www.hfotusa.org.
For six consecutive years, HFOT has received a 4-star rating for sound fiscal management and commitment to accountability and transparency by Charity Navigator, America's premier charity evaluator. The 4-star rating represents the highest one achievable by nonprofits.

About Homes For Our Troops (HFOT): Homes For Our Troops (HFOT) is a privately funded 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization that builds and donates specially adapted custom homes nationwide to severely injured Post-9/11 Veterans. Most of these Veterans have sustained life-altering injuries including multiple limb amputations, partial or full paralysis, and/or severe traumatic brain injury (TBI). These homes restore some of the freedom and independence our Veterans sacrificed while defending our country, and enable them to focus on their family, recovery, and rebuilding their lives. HFOT builds these homes where the Veteran chooses to live, and continues its relationship with the Veterans after home delivery to assist them with rebuilding their lives. Since its inception in 2004, nearly 90 percent of donations to Homes For Our Troops have gone directly to our program services supporting Veterans. For more information, visit www.hfotusa.org.
