NEWPORT BEACH, Calif., Dec. 11, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- HomeAid America, a building industry charity and one of the nation's largest builders of housing for the homeless, spent the month of November holding events and undertaking activities to highlight and address homelessness in this country. The annual event is called HomeAid's Homelessness Awareness Month.
"Homelessness continues to be a major issue in this country, and we need to give it more attention," said Peter Simons, CEO of HomeAid America, the national charity that was founded over 28 years ago as a way for the building industry to give back to the community by addressing the issue of homelessness. Over 3.5 million Americans experience homelessness, and well over 1 million of them are children.
"HomeAid feels that its Homelessness Awareness Month helps to bring attention to this problem and the many groups it affects, and just as importantly shows ways that we can all take action to get this societal problem addressed," said Simons.
Most of HomeAid's 17 chapters participated in the campaign, focusing their efforts for the four calendar weeks in November on 1) youth at risk, 2) veterans, 3) homeless families, and 4) hunger. Some of the chapter events and activities that took place included:
- Orange County, San Diego, and Atlanta each conducted a month long "30 ways in 30 days" campaign
- Colorado participated in Veterans Stand Down event
- Puget Sound held a Care Kits Day with Bank of America volunteers
- Northern Virginia SEVA Truck and Winter Essentials delivered supplies to tent cities
For the second year in a row, Stearns Lending—a national partner of HomeAid America— held a "Lending Hands HomeAid for the Holidays Drive". In this effort, Stearns held Care Kits Days benefiting four different chapters and created and delivered over 3,500 Care Kits to homeless shelters around the country.
