Home Professionals Gear Up for Smart Tech Surge
HomeAdvisor-CEDIA survey of home service pros reveals broadening opportunities for pros in the smart home field
SAN DIEGO, Sept. 7, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- CEDIA Conference – HomeAdvisor, the nation's leading digital home service marketplace, and CEDIA, the international trade association for companies who design, manufacture and install technology for the home, today announced the results* of a survey of 1,450 smart home installation and maintenance professionals. The survey, taken of home professionals ranging from high-end custom installers to handymen, explores the emergence of the smart home industry from the perspective of the pros who know it best. The results reveal that more than three quarters of home professionals are regularly receiving requests for smart home installation or service. What's more, they expect this demand to increase over the coming 12 months.
"This report shows that when it comes to smart home technologies, homeowners are migrating away from DIY to more of a 'do-it-for-me mindset,'" said HomeAdvisor Smart Home Strategist Dan DiClerico. "The findings present a blueprint that will help professionals succeed in the ever-evolving smart home field."
Key findings:
- Pros see a surge in smart home service requests. Three out of four professionals say they've gotten more smart home-related calls in the last year. The clear majority receive service requests at least once a month — and many get them weekly and even daily.
- A wide range of tradespersons are regularly receiving smart home service requests. The proliferation of whole-home connectivity products has opened the door to pros specializing in security, landscaping, door and window installation, remodeling, handyman services, and design renovation, as well as traditional audio/video integration.
- Projects go beyond single-device installs. Smart home technology is quickly becoming intrinsic to the renovation process. More than half of survey respondents report doing smart home installations as part of larger remodeling projects. And six in 10 pros say non-smart home projects are now leading to smart home projects at least half the time.
- Pros want more training and education. Home service professionals are actively seeking to learn and know more about smart home products, installation and maintenance.
"Having a smart, connected home is becoming more desired and accessible, driving demand for smart home professionals," said Dave Pedigo, CEDIA VP of Emerging Technologies. "This survey allowed us to tap into a large qualified group of pros doing smart home installations. The results are pretty clear: There is tremendous growth opportunity in our market, and CEDIA will be there to offer the necessary skills and training for those home professionals who need to get up to speed."
