The analysis of home improvement data from Porch indicates the types of projects that experience the largest growth between October and December. The winner in the Seattle area: Window projects, which surge a whopping 29.3% in just two months. Bedroom projects came in second with a 23.6% increase.
Jason Jarman of Rainier Custom Homes, a local Seattle area contracting professional, confirms that homeowners around the Puget Sound area replace windows prior to winter "because most people want to be more energy efficient and cut down their heating bill." Jarman recommends that homeowners "check exterior windows and fix caulking once to twice a year around April 1st and November 1st to withstand harsh weather conditions."
Rounding out the list was safety projects (like new detectors, alarms, or security systems) with a 17.1% increase, basement projects at a 14.3% gain, and fireplace projects, which increased 12.7%.
Homeowners who are thinking of doing one of these projects soon should consider moving their schedule up a few months and get it done in October, instead. "It typically takes about three to four weeks to schedule a project," notes Jarman from Rainier Custom Homes. For reliable professional recommendations, Jarman suggests that homeowners utilize platforms such as Porch, noting the site is a "great tool for the 'mobile age', where so much of contractors and homeowners work is done on phones, iPads, and laptops."
