Holcim (US) Celebrates Centennial
Hagerstown Facility Demonstrates Commitment to Community through Employee-Driven Projects
HAGERSTOWN, Md., Dec. 26, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- The Holcim (US) Hagerstown cement plant located in Hagerstown, Maryland is participating in a year-long community service initiative marking the centennial of its parent company, Holcim Ltd. Holcim (US), one of the nation's leading manufacturers and suppliers of cement and mineral components, celebrated its 100-year anniversary by participating in Together for Communities, an initiative in which employees lead local volunteer projects.
"The Hagerstown facility participated in projects that truly serve local needs and advance Holcim's values of strength, performance and passion," said Filiberto Ruiz, deputy chief executive officer of Holcim (US). "Each project is well-suited to the area and further Holcim's commitment to sustainability and community leadership. I commend the employees for their excellent response to Together for Communities."
Throughout the year, the Hagerstown facility partnered with numerous organizations, including the Salvation Army, United Way Day of Caring and the YMCA, to address community needs. Employees also participated in the Antietam Creek Rubbish Roundup and the Washington County Homeless Coalition's Homeless Resource Day. In addition to volunteering on the Homeless Resource Day, employees held a fundraiser to cover the cost associated with the material needed to make blankets for the children attending the event.
As part of Together for Communities employees also painted at Potomac Heights Elementary School, planted flags for Breast Cancer Awareness Cumberland Valley, volunteered at the Washington County Public Schools Cross Country Run and Northern Middle School's Veterans Dinner. Employees also held a successful toy drive for Christmas.
Together for Communities builds on the Holcim mission and extends the values that are essential to creating the highest quality products. Holcim Ltd hopes to engage as many of its 80,000 worldwide employees as possible to volunteer for one day in their community. Because Holcim recognizes employees have unique knowledge of their communities, each project is employee-led and geared toward local needs. Though each volunteer activity is driven by local needs, the initiative is a global one.
