Hoffa: House-Passed Customs Bill Does Nothing To Improve TPP For U.S. Workers

Teamsters General President Says Americans Still Have No Reason to Like Trade Deal
WASHINGTON, Dec. 2, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The following is the official statement of Teamsters General President Jim Hoffa in response to the House passing a customs reauthorization bill today that does little to address the many shortfalls contained in the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), a deal which would lead to tens of thousands of U.S. jobs being shipped overseas and lower wages for many Americans.
"While some have suggested that the passage of customer reauthorization legislation would include language that would make the TPP more palatable, the deal leaves the same sour taste in the mouths of everyday Americans. By failing to address currency manipulation, for instance, the economic and employment conditions for millions of U.S. workers are still at risk.
"Americans' fears over how the TPP will tamp down on wages, allow foreign companies to sue governments and create even larger trade deficits due to a lack of currency manipulation controls are very real and justified. That's why there continues to be only one right answer for lawmakers when it comes to this Pacific Rim trade agreement. Just say no."
