KANSAS CITY, Mo., Sept. 12, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Teamsters General President James P. Hoffa joined Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon and Missouri AFL-CIO Secretary-Treasurer and House Minority Leader Jake Hummel at a rally in Kansas City, Mo. today to support a bipartisan coalition of lawmakers working to uphold the governor's veto of right-to-work legislation.
Hundreds of union members from across the state showed their support at the rally as Hoffa and Nixon pledged to continue the fight to keep so-called right-to-work legislation out of Missouri.
"Right-to-work is wrong for the working men and women of Missouri," Hoffa said. "With his veto, Gov. Nixon sent a clear message to the corporate interests that are trying to undercut wages and benefits – right-to-work will never become law on his watch."
Nixon vetoed HB 116 in June after the Missouri House passed the bill by 92-66 and in the Senate by a vote of 21-13. Supporters of the bill need a two-thirds majority vote to overturn Nixon's veto.
Right-to-work states lag behind in wages, with workers averaging nearly $6,000 less annually. Eight of the ten states with the lowest minimum wages and nine of the ten states with the highest poverty levels are right-to-work.
"This attempt by outside special interests to cut wages for workers would also reduce access to training, jeopardize public safety and weaken our entire economy," Nixon said. "That's why a strong bipartisan coalition of legislators continues to support my veto of this divisive legislation. I look forward to the General Assembly sustaining my veto and getting back to the priorities that are moving our state forward."
