UIT will use the system to build a cloud platform which will host university's virtual campus. New training courses, online applications, and other services will be developed and tested in this cloud environment. In addition, IBM PureSystems will support selected scientific projects across the fields of IT systems, computer science, computer engineering, software engineering, and network communications.
"To stay ahead of curve, it is critical for students and lecturers to have constant access to the university's training resources. We want to develop a 'virtual campus' that can be tailored to the needs of our expanding academic community," said Duong Anh Duc, Rector of UIT. "We have been looking for an IT infrastructure that can fundamentally change the experience and economics in the way we manage our IT. IBM's PureSystems technology is deeply integrated and tuned, capturing top notch expertise from thousands of data deployments, providing us with easy access to diverse workloads."
Established in 2006, UIT, a member of Vietnam National University, is one of the leading universities in Vietnam. It aims at equipping students and IT professionals with new technology skills to prepare them for the jobs of the future. It is particularly focused on scientific research curricula and advanced information and communications technologies that can be applied to elevate the role Vietnam plays in the ASEAN region.
IBM provided UIT with a solution consisting of IBM PureFlex System, IBM Tivoli Service Delivery Manager and IBM Workload Deployer - a hardware appliance that enables access to IBM middleware virtual images and patterns to easily, quickly and repeatedly create application environments that can be securely deployed and managed in a private cloud. This Smarter Computing IT infrastructure helps UIT provide cloud-based applications to support virtual education services to the students and university staff. The new system will also free up UIT's internal IT resources and enhance student experience.
"IBM PureSystems offers the features and functionality that make it the ideal platform to run next-generation applications and open up new horizons in the education industry," said Nguyen Kim Hoa, Country Manager of Systems and Technology Group, IBM Vietnam. "UIT's approach of applying advanced technologies helps to solidify its position as a leading provider of high-standards IT training. With this project we hope to make it easier for UIT to continually adapt programs and teaching methods preparing today's students for tomorrow's careers."
The deal was closed in October, and IBM has already installed the smarter computing infrastructure.
According to the collaboration agreement signed today, IBM will support UIT in setting up a Cloud Computing Lab that will enable the university to engage in research activities and collaborate with leading industries in the region. UIT will join IBM's Cloud Academy with other leading academic institutions in the world to shape the direction and implementation of Cloud Computing in the education process. IBM's Cloud Labs worldwide will provide cloud environment and training activities with focus on Platform-as-a-Service layer. UIT's lecturers and staff will be able to constantly refresh their knowledge by attending quarterly technology seminars on cloud computing.
The IBM PureSystems family offers clients an alternative to current enterprise computing models, where multiple and disparate systems require significant resources to set up and maintain. PureFlex System enables organizations to more efficiently create and manage an infrastructure. PureApplication System helps organizations reduce the cost and complexity of rapidly deploying and managing applications. PureData System is tuned for cloud computing and can consolidate more than 100 databases on a single system. In addition to the common web application patterns supported by PureApplication System, the combination of both PureData and PureApplication Systems can be used for end to end transaction workloads.
For IBM Business Partners, PureSystems creates a new opportunity to help clients solve the complexity of enterprise IT, reduce costs and encourage innovation. From resellers to distributors and Independent Software Vendors (ISVs), more than 700 Business Partners are supporting IBM PureSystems. PureSystems currently run tens of thousands of existing ISV applications across four operating environments including Windows, Linux, AIX, and IBM i operating system. Additionally, Business Partners have created more than 200 new solutions and applications that are optimized to run on PureSystems. These patterns of expertise, which span 20 industries, can be accessed through the IBM PureSystems Centre. They include leading solutions from some of the world's largest ISVs, including ERP systems and applications for the banking, marketing, healthcare and energy industries.
To help address the new opportunity that PureSystems presents, IBM is also providing training, marketing, certifications and technical validation support to business partners. For instance, dozens of IBM Innovation Centers in cities such as Bangalore, Dublin, Johannesburg and Shanghai are helping Business Partners develop and test their applications using IBM PureSystems. Business Partners can also bring their clients to IBM Innovation Centers to see PureSystems technology at work.
