HNBA Commends the Confirmation of The Honorable Marisa J. Demeo to the Superior Court of the District of Columbia

WASHINGTON, April 21 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Hispanic National Bar Association (HNBA) applauds the Senate confirmation of the Honorable Marisa J. Demeo to be an Associate Judge of the Superior Court of the District of Columbia.  The Senate voted to confirm Judge Demeo for a 15-year term by a vote of 66 to 32.  In particular, the HNBA applauds Majority Leader Reid's leadership in calling for a Senate vote on Judge Demeo's nomination.

Hernandez, HNBA National President, noted that "The HNBA supported Judge Demeo's nomination to the Superior Court and previously supported her appointment as Magistrate Judge because of her breadth of experience in the public sector, prior litigation experience and superb legal skills.  She will make an exceptional Superior Court judge."

For the last 3 years, Judge Demeo has presided over all stages of cases in the criminal division of the Superior Court.  Prior to joining the bench, she was a prosecutor with the United States Attorney's Office for the District of Columbia, where she rotated through the Misdemeanor, Felony, Grand Jury, and Sex Offense Domestic Violence Sections.  While serving as an Assistant United States Attorney, Judge Demeo also taught a criminal procedure class and an immigration course at Howard University School of Law.  She began her legal career at the Department of Justice in the Civil Rights Division, where she litigated Title VII cases against state and local governments in federal district courts around the country.  In 1997, she joined the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund (MALDEF) as a Legislative Attorney.  Given her superior legal and advocacy skills, a year later she rose to the position of Regional Counsel for the Washington, D.C. office.
