WASHINGTON, May 21 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Hispanic National Bar Association (HNBA) commends President Barack H. Obama's decision to nominate The Honorable Edward J. Davila to the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California. The Northern District of California includes the cities of San Francisco, Oakland and San Jose, with a population of more than 7.3 million people, 26 percent of whom are Latino. If confirmed, Judge Davila will be the only Latino judge serving in the Northern District.
"Judge Davila is well-qualified to serve as a federal jurist in the Northern District of California. His leadership in and commitment to the community is also exemplary. We call on the U.S. Senate to proceed in a fair and expeditious manner toward his confirmation," stated Roman D. Hernandez, HNBA National President. A native of the Bay Area, Judge Davila began his legal career as a Deputy Public Defender in the Office of the Public Defender in Santa Clara County. After serving in the Public Defender's Office, he went into private practice as a partner at the law firm of Davila & Polverino. Prior to joining the bench, Judge Davila spent twenty years as a trial lawyer. Since 2001, Judge Davila has served as a judge of the Santa Clara County Superior Court, where he oversees cases in the criminal, civil, family and juvenile justice divisions.
President Hernandez concluded, "HNBA members are leaders in diverse substantive areas of the law whose expertise is being recognized by the broader legal community and President Obama's Administration. We anticipate additional nominations of HNBA members in the near term."
