BROOKLYN, N.Y., June 8, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- The Hispanic Information and Telecommunications Network - HITN TV, continuing its mission of presenting programming relevant for Spanish-speaking audiences in the United States and Puerto Rico, presents two special programming events, Un Saludo desde la Isla del Encanto and Unidos por Puerto Rico, celebrating the National Puerto Rican Day Parade in Arecibo, Puerto Rico, and New York City on Sunday, June 12.
"On the second Sunday in June, Puerto Ricans organize parades as a sign of pride in their national identity," explained Florentina Almonte, Director of Programming at HITN-TV. "These are very special occasions full of meaning for Puerto Ricans on and off the island."
The parades have a different theme every year, usually based on an iconic symbol from the island's history. This year's parades will celebrate the beauty, culture and history of the city of Arecibo, Puerto Rico.
On June 12, Puerto Ricans and other New Yorkers who enjoy the island's music and food will gather to watch the parade along Manhattan's Fifth Avenue. The National Puerto Rican Day Parade has become a point of pride for the city's Boricua community and a cultural symbol for Hispanics in general. Around 80,000 people participated in last year's parade, and more than two million others came out to enjoy the spectacle.
Un Saludo desde la Isla del Encanto, an original production of Puerto Rico Public Broadcasting Corporation (WIPR) for HITN-TV, will showcase the natural beauty and points of interest in Arecibo, the site of this year's parade in Puerto Rico. Celebrities such as Chuco Avellanet, Myraida Chávez, Yara Lasanta and Silverio Pérez will be on hand for the festivities.
Unidos por Puerto Rico, a one-hour HITN TV special, will profile the 2016 National Puerto Rican Day Parade in New York City. Hosted by journalist and commentator Gerson Borrero, the program will trace the traditional parade route down Fifth Avenue, the 152nd Street Cultural Festival in the Bronx, and the gala honoring prominent members of the Puerto Rican community.
Also featured will be well-known figures in Puerto Rican music, including Ednita Nazario, Andy Montañez and others who have contributed to the island's artistic and culture legacy.
"More than any other event, the National Puerto Rican Day Parade is a joyful celebration of the culture and traditions of the Enchanted Isle," Almonte added. "We are proud to expose our audience to this colorful and music-filled event dedicated to showcasing the values of the Puerto Rican people."
Un Saludo desde la Isla del Encanto will air on Sunday, June 12 at 8:30 pm / 5:30 PT on HITN-TV and Puerto Rico Public Broadcasting Corporation (WIPR), and again at 11:30 pm / 8:30 PT, followed immediately after by Unidos por Puerto Rico at 9:00 pm / 6:00 PT and again at 12:00 am / 9:00 pm PT on HITN-TV.
