Historic UC Doctors' Strike Tuesday 1/27 -- Picket Locations Announced

OAKLAND, Calif. and LOS ANGELES, Jan. 23, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Doctors at all ten University of California student health centers will hold a one-day unfair labor practice strike on Tuesday, January 27th, starting at 7:30 am. This will mark the first time in 25 years that fully-licensed doctors have gone on strike against a US employer.

WHEN: Tuesday, January 27, 2015. The picket lines will run from 7:30 am until 2:30 pm at the campuses listed below. Doctors at those locations will also hold rallies at 12 noon featuring both UC workers and students as speakers.

WHO: The 150 fully licensed doctors who work at the University of California student health centers will be joined by other UC workers, UC students, and supporters from the community. The doctors are represented by the Union of American Physicians and Dentists (UAPD) (www.uapd.com).

BACKGROUND: Student health doctors at the University of California (UC) unionized in 2013 to realize their goal of providing students with the best primary health care and mental health services possible. They've been in negotiations for their first contract for a year, during which time they were forced to file multiple unfair labor practice charges over UC's illegal behavior at the bargaining table. This will be the first strike in the doctor union's 43 year history. As UAPD President Dr. Stuart Bussey told UC Regents and administrators at their January 22^nd meeting, "Until now, we have never needed to strike to get fair treatment for doctors. The University, on the other hand, faces strikes on a regular basis. I encourage you, as leaders, to take a serious look at UC's labor relations departments and the disruptive, anti-union attitudes I see deeply rooted there."

VISUAL/AUDIO: Doctors in lab coats will chant and march with picket signs in front of the campus health centers. Other UC workers and students will speak in support of doctors at the rally.
