Historic Sites Along the Pennsylvania Trail of History Opening for Summer

Volunteers, Friends Help Operate Sites in Times of Dwindling State Resources

HARRISBURG, Pa., May 20 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- With summer fast approaching, the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (PHMC) announced that the 23 historic sites along the Pennsylvania Trail of History, including the State Museum of Pennsylvania and the State Archives in Harrisburg, will be open this travel season.

Given the state's fiscal constraints, Franco praised the efforts of volunteer "friends" groups and local organizations that stepped forward in their communities to enlist volunteers and raise funds to reopen Pennsylvania's historic sites for visitation. She said long-term preservation depends on the continued support of the state in partnership with local groups to ensure that these special places are preserved for future generations.  

"These historic sites are the places that make Pennsylvania a distinctive and attractive destination for visitors," Franco said. "They are an integral part of the infrastructure that supports education, tourism, and the strong sense of place and identity that Pennsylvanians value and have worked so hard to preserve."

Franco said some of the sites are only open for special occasions. Before visiting a historic site, consumers should check the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission website at www.patrailsofhistory.com and click on Trail of History for hours of operations and scheduled special events.
