Historic Bath Alum Springs estate in Bath County, Virginia, to sell at auction
MILLBORO, Va., March 13, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- The land known as Bath Alum Springs Estate once hosted the likes of Thomas Jefferson, Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson. Today, the original inn has been replaced by two mansions – a stately antebellum-style home and a second in a contemporary style. Both, along with dozens of other properties, will be offered at auction April 17. Woltz & Associates will manage the event.
"You truly have a unique situation here, in that two stunning mansions are being offered in such dramatically different styles," said Jim Woltz, president of the auction company.
The centerpiece is the Manor House, a 7,515-square-foot antebellum style mansion built in 1930, built using bricks recovered from the original inn. It sits on approximately 146 acres, which also include the 3,500-foot paved air strip and three hangars. Nearby is the contemporary Eagle's Nest, a 9,489-square-foot home with 360-degree views of the mountains and a 1,100-square-foot kitchen. In all, 32 tracts will be included in the auction.
"There are so many features to Bath Alum it's impossible to list them all. The Manor House also has a 16' x 40' heated indoor pool. Other tracts include an office building, a mountain chalet, an apartment building, and various sized recreation tracts bordering the National Forest. This would be ideal for the family or corporation seeking a private compound in the Virginia mountains," said Woltz.
Woltz noted that the reserve on the properties is just over half the tax assessment.
"These properties combined have a tax assessment of $7,866,100, but they will sell for a cumulative total of $4 million or greater. That represents a remarkable opportunity," said Woltz.
The auction will begin at 3 p.m. Friday, April 17, at the Omni Homestead Resort, 7696 Sam Snead Highway, Hot Springs, Va. Woltz personnel will be available to show the property and guide inspections March 22 and 29, and April 4, 12, 16 and 17.
