Hill Physicians Shows What Collaboration Looks Like
Medical Group's Strategic Philosophy Brought to Life in 2013 Annual Report
SAN RAMON, Calif., June 10, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- When it came time to create the look and feel for the 2013 annual report, Hill Physicians turned to the people who have been working to improve healthcare delivery across Northern California.
"Collaboration: Creating a Mosaic of Care" not only conveys Hill Physicians' long-held strategic view of partnering, but also bears the imprint of more than 100 employees who came together to cut glass and grout tiles as they assembled the physical mosaic featured throughout the annual report. "Articulate a vision that people can be excited about and seek their help in building it," said CEO Darryl Cardoza.
The approach seems to be working. Hill Physicians reported revenues that crossed the half-billion dollar mark for the first time with net income in 2013 of $13.6 million.
"Our focus has long been on collaboration in the healthcare system," said CEO Darryl Cardoza. "The lessons learned from this long tradition have kept us at the forefront in creating effective accountability across the delivery system."
California's largest network of independent providers has been very active in streamlining care coordination processes through four Accountable Care type arrangements for commercial populations.
These initiatives require health plans, hospitals, physicians and medical groups to move from fragmented and disjointed healthcare silos to integrated and coordinated healthcare delivery. In order to be successful, the participants develop overall goals, share financial risks and rewards, exchange information rapidly and develop care processes that bridge care gaps for medically fragile patients. Since inception, more than $105 million has been saved compared to the trend line.
"We place a great deal of emphasis on shared goals, shared incentives and shared information," said Cardoza. "But at the end of the day that spirit of collaboration comes down to hard work. We thought this theme for our annual report reflected that ethic."
Despite a four-year track record in formal ACO programs with key partners that have produced continually improving results, leadership does not underestimate the challenges ahead. "The impact of federal healthcare reform will take a few years to fully play out," said COO David Joyner. "We've already seen the impact across the landscape, which reaffirms our commitment to the mission and sense of urgency about the need for continual process improvement."
Hill Physicians' 2013 Annual Report, consolidated financial statement and a time-lapse video of the mosaic making process are posted at HillPhysicians.com/2013.
The completed mosaic, measuring 4' x 2', hangs in the network's headquarters in San Ramon, California.
