TORONTO, June 13, 2014 /CNW/ - The 17th Annual Canadian Journalism Foundation Awards celebrated journalistic excellence at its largest event ever, with more than 500 journalists, media executives and business leaders attending the sold-out event at The Fairmont Royal York in Toronto on June 4.
The Toronto Star won the Excellence in Journalism Award in the large-media category, which it won previously in 2011 and 2010. The award honours an organization that embodies exemplary journalistic standards and practices with a resulting impact on the community it serves.
"No matter how technology disrupts the way that we gather information and disseminate our journalism, the pursuit of truth has not changed," said Star editor Michael Cooke upon accepting the award. "And for the good of our cities, and for the good of our province, and for the good of our country, it must not change, because that's our charge—and that's our glory. And that speaks directly to excellent reporting."
Other Excellence in Journalism Award finalists in the large/national category included the CP Picture Service, CTV News, Globalnews.ca and the Winnipeg Free Press.
The Vancouver Observer won the Excellence in Journalism Award in the local-media category, an honour it also received in 2012. L'Echo de Frontenac received an Honourable Mention. Other finalists in the local/regional media category included CBC Edmonton, CBC New Brunswick and Global Calgary. Among the evening's other awards:
The previously announced Lifetime Achievement Award went to Peter Bregg (see the tribute video), for a remarkable career capturing images at home and abroad. Bregg was chief photographer at Maclean's for 17 years; has worked as a photographer and photo editor with The Canadian Press and the Associated Press in Ottawa, Boston, London, New York and Washington, D.C.; and was the official photographer to Prime Minister Brian Mulroney in 1984-85. Bregg is a member of PhotoSensitive, a photo collective that uses photography to support charitable causes, and he continues to take freelance commissions while teaching photojournalism at Toronto's Ryerson University School of Journalism.
This year, the CJF Tribute honoured a remarkable year of investigative journalism by recognizing individual journalistic excellence from across the country. The honourees were:
