STATE COLLEGE, Pa., Nov. 16, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- The number of jobs in higher education grew during the third quarter of 2012, continuing to outpace growth of all U.S. jobs. The "market share" of higher education jobs compared to all U.S. jobs continued to increase as well but only incrementally in the third quarter, a trend that has persisted for several years. Similarly, the number of advertisements for job openings in higher education continued to grow, but at a moderating pace in the third quarter of 2012, according to a new report from HigherEdJobs, the leading source for jobs and career information in academia. An analysis of U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) data by HigherEdJobs finds that the number of jobs at colleges and universities grew 2.2 percent during Q3 2012 while the number of jobs in the overall U.S. economy increased 1.4 percent, a difference of 0.8 percentage points. A year earlier in Q3 2011, the difference between the growth rates of higher education and overall jobs was the same.
The pace of advertisements for both new and replacement job openings in higher education was also up in Q3 2012, and, as seen in recent analyses, at a decelerating growth rate. The number of higher education job postings grew 10.4 percent in Q3 2012, compared to 17.4 percent growth in Q3 2011.
Colleges and universities shifted toward more part-time hires during Q3 20112, especially for faculty. While advertisements for full-time faculty were up 2.7 percent, ads for part-time faculty were up 16.8 percent.
The report analyzes job posting data from colleges and universities that have continuously subscribed to the company's unlimited posting plan for four years or longer, a group of more than 700 schools, as well as data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
