Higher Education Employment Increases in Q1 2016

STATE COLLEGE, Pa., May 23, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- The number of jobs in higher education increased 0.7 percent in Q1 2016, the largest first quarter growth since Q1 2013, according to a recent report from HigherEdJobs, a leading job and career site for higher education professionals.

According to an analysis of U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data by HigherEdJobs, higher education employment increased 0.7 percent in the first quarter, representing a gain of approximately 12,500 college and university jobs. Despite the recent growth in higher education jobs, the U.S. economy added jobs at an even faster rate. As a result, the market share of higher education jobs compared to all U.S. jobs continued to decline in Q1 2016.

The report also found that ads for open positions in academia were up 13.7 percent during Q1 2016.  However, while positive, the growth rate in higher education job postings was slower than a year ago.

There was good news for individuals looking for full-time positions in higher education. For the first time since 2104, first quarter job postings for all full-time higher education jobs outpaced the increase of postings for part-time positions in Q1 2016.  And, ads for full-time faculty increased 10.0 percent from a year ago. Postings for part-time faculty were flat during Q1 2016 compared to last year.

The report analyzes the most current data from BLS and HigherEdJobs' posting trends from colleges and universities that have continuously subscribed to the company's unlimited posting plan for four years, a group of roughly 880 schools that have no financial deterrent not to post any openings.
