STATE COLLEGE, Pa., March 4, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- The number of jobs in higher education decreased in Q4 2013 for the second consecutive quarter. Over the same period, the number of advertisements for job openings in higher education continued to grow according to a new report from HigherEdJobs, the leading source for jobs and career information in academia. The full report can be viewed at http://www.higheredjobs.com/career/quarterly-report.cfmhttp://www.higheredjobs.com/career/quarterly-report.cfm.
An analysis of U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data by HigherEdJobs found the total number of jobs in higher education was down 0.7 percent in Q4 2013, or about 13,800 jobs. Community colleges in particular noticed a decrease in jobs, dropping 11.0 percent in Q4 2013 compared to the same period the prior year.
While overall employment in higher education was relatively flat, the number of advertisements for job openings in academia increased 12.3 percent for the quarter and 13.9 percent for the year Potentially, colleges and universities may be losing increasing numbers of employees -- either to other institutions, non-educational employers as the overall economy provides an increasing number of employment opportunities, or to retirement -- and are choosing to fill only a portion of the vacancies. According to data from HigherEdJobs, a pattern of uniform and stable employment in higher education has emerged recently with only relatively slight changes occurring in different categories of job postings.
The report analyzes data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and HigherEdJobs' posting data from colleges and universities that have continuously subscribed to the company's unlimited posting plan for four years, a group of more than 850 schools that have no financial deterrent not to post any openings. This edition also contains a special section on job postings in student affairs and services.
