ATLANTA, March 12 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- HERZING UNIVERSITY - When Joan Russell chose to complete her Bachelor of Science in Legal Studies degree at the Herzing University – Atlanta campus, she never dreamt it would lead to her meeting the Speaker of the House of Representatives. "I've been a big fan of Nancy Pelosi for a long time," said Ms. Russell, who graduated in April 2009 and is employed as a Paralegal for the Director of Clayton County Public Defender's Office in Jonesboro. Prior to a meeting with Congressman Steve Kagen (D-WI) in the Senate Building, Ms. Russell's excitement at recognizing the House Speaker prompted Ms. Pelosi to extend an invitation to accompany her in the service elevator for a quick chat. They discussed Russell's background and her participation in the "Hill Day" event. "I will never, ever, ever forget it!" exclaimed Russell.
Russell was one of five Herzing University students and alumni chosen to accompany Chancellor Henry Herzing and President Renee Herzing on the third annual "Herzing on The Hill" event to discuss the merits of career education with members of Congress on Capitol Hill. Specifically, the group sought to thank Congress members for their support of funding for education and urge them to create policies that are more favorable in allowing students the ability to choose the career education that's right for them. This event was held in conjunction with the Career College Association's annual "Hill Day."
"I went to Washington D.C. in support of career colleges," Russell stated. "Career colleges, such as Herzing University, have played a major role in my life as well as my daughter's life. As a result of the education I received at Herzing, I am now working in my field with an excellent salary."
In addition to meeting with Congressman Kagen, the group also met with Senator Herb Kohl (D-WI), legislative aides from both the Senate and the House representing Georgia, Minnesota, and Nebraska, and attended a luncheon where keynote speaker Congressman John Kline (R-MN), who serves as ranking Republican on the 50-member Education and Labor Committee, addressed the students.
"Going to Washington D.C. these last three years with our students and alumni is one of the most rewarding experiences I've had with the University," commented Herzing University President Renee Herzing. "I never fail to be impressed by the incredible caliber of our graduates and what they are doing with their careers."
