"Heroin Is Not Chic" Campaign Launches During N.Y. Fashion Week
Non-Profit Partners with D.A.R.E America to Promote Awareness Surrounding National Heroin Epidemic
NEW YORK, Sept. 13, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Heroin Is Not Chic, HINC, a non-profit organization aimed to promote awareness of the growing heroin and opiate epidemic in the United States, has launched a grass-roots media campaign to expand awareness of the rising heroin and opioid epidemic in which 78 Americans die every day from opioid overdoses (CDC). During Fashion Week and for months thereafter, HINC will be employing a variety of media platforms and events to promote education and communication throughout the United States regarding this pernicious epidemic.
Despite this opiate epidemic, the term 'Heroin Chic' in fashion circles glamorizes characteristics associated with addiction, including emaciated bodies and disheveled looks. To counter "Heroin Chic" and similar negative campaigns and messaging, HINC has selected New York Fashion Week to launch its campaign to generate the greatest opportunity to create and spread awareness nationally of this destructive epidemic.
As part of this important endeavor, Heroin Is Not Chic is proud to partner with D.A.R.E. America (www.dare.org), the world's leading education program dedicated to teaching students decision making skills for safe and healthy living.
"It is truly an honor and privilege to partner with such an esteemed organization as D.A.R.E America," said Cathleen DaCosta Bombard, Founder of Heroin Is Not Chic. "Together, we hope to mobilize community through education and awareness. There is no 'face of heroin' – it faces us all."
In 1983, D.A.R.E America started an unprecedented and innovative substance abuse prevention education program – Drug Abuse Resistance Education – which over more than three decades has spread worldwide positively impacting the lives of millions of children.
"We are thrilled to partner with Heroin Is Not Chic on this very special campaign. HINC embodies the spirit of D.A.R.E America's mission with a laser targeted twist. We look forward to growing the program together to fulfill our mission of teaching students good decision-making skills to help them lead safe and healthy lives," said Francisco Pegueros, President & CEO of D.A.R.E America.
