TYLER, Texas, April 14, 2020 /PRNewswire/ -- Heritage Land Bank has donated a total of $15,000 to three Texas food banks to meet increased demand for food assistance as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The rural lending cooperative donated $5,000 apiece to East Texas Food Bank, North Texas Food Bank and Tarrant Area Food Bank, which distribute meals throughout its service territory.
Combined, these food banks serve more than 100 million meals annually, helping to relieve hunger across North and East Texas. Each food bank has increased its food distribution and is adjusting to serve the public in this time of need. In Tarrant County alone, distribution of healthy food has increased 65% since March 13.
"The support from Heritage Land Bank will help ensure North Texas Food Bank has the flexibility to adapt to the fluid nature of the pandemic while also sustaining our normal operations," said Trisha Cunningham, president and CEO of the North Texas Food Bank. "We are grateful for donors like Heritage Land Bank!"
"The unprecedented impact of this pandemic has affected many families, and we want to do our part to help them through these challenges," said Heritage Land Bank CEO Bill Tandy. "Additionally, many of our customers produce the meat, milk, vegetables and grains the food banks distribute, so it makes sense to help connect our agricultural producers with those who need the food."
Heritage Land Bank has temporarily closed its branches during the COVID-19 outbreak to protect the health of its customers, employees and communities. It continues to serve customers by phone, online banking and mobile app.
