HENAAC Honors Three Lockheed Martin Innovators

BETHESDA, Md., Oct. 7, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- The annual Hispanic Engineer National Achievement Awards Conference (HENAAC) honored three Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) engineers for their innovative technology achievements and contributions to their communities. The awards were presented on Oct. 3 at HENAAC 2014, hosted by Great Minds in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) in New Orleans.

Sergio Torres, Ph.D., a Lockheed Martin Fellow with Information Systems and Global Solutions (IS&GS), was named the 2014 HENAAC Scientist of the Year. Dr. Torres has made significant contributions in the domain of air traffic management. He has provided innovative and unique research and solutions to help advance the Federal Aviation Administration's goals of implementing their NextGen strategy to enhance safety and reliability of air travel.

Edward Jimenez, Ph.D., senior member, Software Systems Research and Development at Sandia National Laboratories, received the Most Promising Engineer or Scientist – Advanced Degree Award. Dr. Jimenez has achieved notable success in research involving large scale computed tomography reconstruction algorithms, high performance semantic web hashing and querying algorithms, and industrial radiography. He also volunteers for a National Science Foundation-funded program that supports at-risk Hispanic youth, motivating them to pursue a STEM career.

Ruben Herrera, operations and maintenance development lead at IS&GS, received the Information Technology Award. Herrera plays a key role in ensuring mission critical systems for the Internal Revenue Service are available and operating as they should. Herrera has been an active participant in community organizations during his career, most recently supporting the education achievement of Hispanic students and other under-represented student populations in science and engineering.

Lockheed Martin Chairman, CEO and President Marillyn Hewson, speaking at the awards event, congratulated all of this year's honorees and noted the critical importance of supporting STEM outreach.
