Helzberg Diamonds Jockey Remains Favorite In Derby
Javier Castellano, Rider of Gemologist, continues to be a top contender for 2012 Kentucky Derby
KANSAS CITY, Mo., May 4, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Javier Castellano, rider of Gemologist, continues to be a favored pick and strong contender for the 2012 Kentucky Derby on May 5, 2012. Castellano recently partnered with Helzberg Diamonds to drive awareness of featured products in advance of the 138th Run for the Roses.
"The entire team at Helzberg Diamonds is rooting for Javier and Gemologist," said Beryl Raff, chairman and CEO of Helzberg Diamonds. "We couldn't be more thrilled to partner with Javier, and we're looking forward to seeing his hard work pay off in the Derby."
Heading into the Derby, Castellano and Gemologist have won four straight races, including the Grade 1 Wood Memorial. Castellano is currently the leading jockey in major wins and earnings. He will be riding Gemologist in an effort to join other undefeated Kentucky Derby winners. A total of seven horses have won the Derby undefeated and Gemologist will be the 23rd to attempt since 1900.
"Winning the Kentucky Derby would be an absolute honor on Gemologist, especially since few have done it undefeated," said Castellano.
Gemologist arrived at Churchill Downs in late morning on May 1st and will continue preparations for the Kentucky Derby with Castellano this week.
