Helping Boys Navigate the Journey to Manhood: 'The Difference Between a Man and a Boy'
SEATTLE, April 2 /PRNewswire/ -- In a world where the general populace is bombarded with very confusing images, many young people are left with a distorted worldview. Young men are told to act one way, but then presented with images that contradict what they are told. This contradiction leaves them feeling bewildered and asking the question, "How am I supposed to function as an adult?" In her new book, The Difference Between a Man and a Boy (published by iUniverse), author Amy Modica Myers lays out a simple road map for young men to follow based on the principles of respect and personal worth.
Modern culture and media send many confusing signals and messages to young people regarding how they should act. Teachers, role models and religious leaders tell young people that they should be respectful and monogamous. All the while TV and movies portray disrespect for people and property and risky social behavior. Young men feel this confusion every bit as much as young women, but because the societal construct says that males are not supposed to be indecisive, they are left to find their own way. The Difference Between a Man and a Boy provides simple, straightforward guidelines that focus on honesty, respect and dignity that can be applied to every facet of life. The Difference Between a Man and a Boy is an owner's manual for males coming of age; a guidebook to help boys navigate the journey to becoming a man.
A man understands that there are times when the truth can hurt and that, on occasion, it can be scary; still he considers that he is a man only if he adheres to it. He admits that, most often, the only person a liar fools is himself; thus, a man strives to be truthful in both his personal and professional relationships. In addition, a man knows that when found to be a liar he has lowered his esteem, and it may never be elevated. A man searches for truth, studies it, and fights for it because he is aware that it takes more courage to tell the truth than to lie.
Amy Modica Myers was born and raised in small town Nevada. She graduated from Elko High School and went on to college. Her post-secondary efforts were challenged due to a condition that was greatly misunderstood at the time: dyslexia. Her collegiate aspirations stymied, she dropped out. Ten years later, Myers overcame her disability and attended Boise State College and Puget Sound Christian College. Encouraged by various professors, Myers discovered that she had a talent for writing. She has published several short stories. Myers is currently working on a follow-up to The Difference Between a Man and a Boy for adolescent girls. She has raised three sons and lives outside of Seattle with her husband and their dog GT. Ms. Myers also spends much of her free time volunteering with at-risk youths and mentoring programs. A portion of the profits from sales of The Difference Between a Man and a Boy will be donated to such programs for at-risk youths.
