Help Name Two Adorable Baby Bald Eagles in Florida
PIGEON FORGE, Tenn., Jan. 5, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- With the hatching of a wild bald eaglet on an eagle cam in south Florida this week, eagle-mania has overtaken the country once again.
Right before Christmas, two other eaglets hatched LIVE on the Northeast Florida (NEFL) Eagle Cam inside the wild nest of eagle parents Romeo & Juliet. This project is run by the American Eagle Foundation (AEF), who also operates the world-famous DC Eagle Cam.
Between sibling rivalry and snuggling, there's never a dull moment when watching two sibling eaglets grow up in a nest together. And with parents as experienced as Romeo and Juliet, there's always enough food and love to go around in this impressively large nest that thousands of fans have dubbed "The Hamlet."
These grey, fuzzy baby eagles are currently being called NE16 and NE17, since they are the 16th and 17th eaglets raised by Romeo and Juliet in this nest. Now, however, the AEF is asking fans to help give these eaglets two nicknames that are as cool as their parents' by participating in a "Name the Nestlings" contest.
The nesting pair laid two eggs in November, the first one on Veterans Day and the second one soon afterwards on the day of the Super Moon. NE16 hatched on December 18th and NE17 hatched on December 20th.
This week, registered members of the AEF have been submitting their favorite name ideas for the two eaglets. They can continue to do so until the end of the submission period, which is Sunday, January 8th, at 11:59pm EST!
Afterwards, the AEF will sift through all of the name submissions and then release the most popular and creative name pairs back to the public for a final vote, and all eagle cam fans will be allowed to participate (not just AEF members).
