The company's APC People Counter is designed for use on buses and trains, but also can be used at fixed locations. HELLA also is introducing a second system -- APC-180 -- for counting people entering or leaving buildings such as museums, airport and train terminals and shopping centers.
Both systems use HELLA's camera-based driver-assistance products and the company's experience in the field of image processing and 3D camera technology. With accuracy levels of more than 98 percent, the people counters automatically adjust for changing light conditions, unusual crowd movement, small objects and other potential distractions.
HELLA introduced the products at "InnoTrans" in Berlin (Sept. 18-21) earlier this month. They also are being shown at "Security Essen" in Essen (Sept. 25-28). "InnoTrans" is an international transportation show with a 2012 theme of "Every Passenger Counts." The Essen conference showcases security and fire-prevention technology.
The APC People Counter has a 110-degree scanning angle to reliably count people entering or leaving buses or trains. It also can record and transmit video in real time, a feature that allows conductors and crew members to monitor activity around doors.
The HELLA systems record, evaluate and forward data. Modular hardware and flexible software architecture allow them to be connected to virtually any backend system. Powerful sensors compensate for wide spaces and vertical movement. Durable packaging protects the systems from accidental damage or vandalism.
Optical self-diagnostic features enable the devices to detect camera obstructions and issue alarms. An Internet interface allows for remote configuration and maintenance. Since monitored individuals are not identified, the APC's video feature does not violate data-protection regulations.
HELLA's APC-180 uses a "stereoscopic" camera with an analysis function especially designed for building security systems. APC-180 can be installed at a height of up to nearly 20 feet and will accurately record the number of people entering, leaving or present in specific building areas.
