Heikkinen Wins Fourth Consecutive Global Rallycross Event at X Games Los Angeles
LOS ANGELES, Aug. 4, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Toomas Heikkinen continued his dominance of the 2013 Global Rallycross season on Sunday, winning his fourth consecutive race and taking his second straight X Games gold medal at Irwindale Speedway. Heikkinen beat Tanner Foust and Sverre Isachsen, who took the silver and bronze medals, and extended his points lead to 39 over Foust.
"It's cool to have a lot of points," said Heikkinen. "Now we have a little bit less pressure, but there's still work to do. Everything is good right now, and I'm not doing anything else but smiling."
Heikkinen became the first driver in Global Rallycross history to win four consecutive events, the other wins coming from X Games Munich, New Hampshire Motor Speedway, and Bristol Motor Speedway. He has 117 points through six rounds this season, a new series record.
Rhys Millen, one of three drivers to make his first start of the season at X Games Los Angeles, finished fourth. Travis Pastrana, after completing a NASCAR Nationwide Series race the previous day, came in fifth. Ken Block, Brian Deegan, Patrik Sandell, Scott Speed, and Liam Doran rounded out the final.
In GRC Lites, Joni Wiman took the victory once again after winning his heat race and pulling away from the field in an eight-car main event. Mitchell deJong, the youngest driver in X Games rally history, finished second, while Sebastian Eriksson overcame a stop-and-go penalty to finish third.
"The track was very quick, so it was very difficult to drive the first three or four laps," said Wiman. "Then it was normal. In the hairpins, I saw the guys beside me, and I could see if they were catching me. I didn't know if they had done the shortcut, so the pressure was on."
The next Global Rallycross race will be held at Atlanta Motor Speedway on Saturday, August 10. The race will be broadcast at 6:30 PM ET on ESPN2.
