Heikkinen Continues Global Rallycross Dominance in Atlanta, Wins Fifth Consecutive Race
LOS ANGELES, Aug. 12, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Coming off of his fourth consecutive Global Rallycross victory and a gold medal at X Games Los Angeles, Toomas Heikkinen of OlsbergsMSE carried his impressive winning streak on for another week, winning the SYLVANIA SilverStar zXe Global Rallycross at Atlanta Motor Speedway.
"The team has done good work, and that's why I'm here," Heikkinen said after the event. "Without (OlsbergsMSE team owner) Andreas Eriksson, this is not possible. I want to win every race!"
For the second race in a row, he beat two-time defending series champion Tanner Foust and three-time European rallycross champion Sverre Isachsen for the win. Foust hung on to second place despite driving the final three laps with a flat left front tire, while Isachsen survived the last chance qualifier and finished third despite starting last in the main event.
"I thought I had something had for (Heikkinen)," explained Foust, "but then with three laps left I got the puncture. Then it became total survival mode. We're pretty lucky to finish on the podium."
"I'm really happy right now," added Isachsen. "Today was extra good, because we had to go through the LCQ, and in the final I was completely last on the grid. If you come to the final, everything can happen."
Heikkinen extended his championship lead over Foust from 39 points to 43, and his lead in the SYLVANIA SilverStar zXe Cup from nine points over Ken Block to 20. Heikkinen can mathematically clinch both championships on September 22 at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
