SEATTLE, Oct. 23, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Healthy Paws Pet Insurance—the #1 customer-rated provider of insurance for dogs and cats—has released the third annual Cost of Pet Health Care Report, a free, downloadable report supported by data from almost 500,000 claims submitted from June 2017 to June 2018. The report details the top ten most common conditions for dogs and cats and their corresponding veterinary costs, plus symptoms, treatment, and case studies.
"Every year, we see pet parents spending more and more at the vet, and we know it's a combination of urgent care, advanced technology and treatment options, as well as a firm commitment to keeping our pets healthy," said Rob Jackson, CEO and co-founder of Healthy Paws Pet Insurance. "Many pet parents find that they cannot afford an emergency surgery of $1,000, much less $10,000 for cancer treatment, and this is how pet insurance can help. When your pet is sick or injured it is comforting to know that you can say 'yes' to necessary medical care without having to worry about the cost because you know you have pet insurance."
Healthy Paws Pet Insurance analyzed data to determine the following top 10 accident and illness claims for both dogs and cats:
Dogs:
- Skin Conditions - 22% of all dog claims
- Stomach Issues
- Ear Infections
- Eye Conditions
- Pain
- Growths (i.e. lumps and bumps)
- Urinary Tract Infections
- Allergies
- Cruciate Ligament Tears and Surgery
- Cancer
Cats:
- Stomach - 29% of all cat claims
- Urinary Tract Infections
- Skin Conditions
- Cancer
- Eye Conditions
- Ear Infections
- Pain
- Growths
- Foreign Body Obstruction
- Allergies
The report also includes the two most expensive claims with happy endings from last year: a German Shepard dog named Lupa who was diagnosed with tetanus toxin exposure (vet bill: $52,021) and an Egyptian Mau purebred cat named Simba who fell from a 5-story window (vet bill: $28,126).
The report's goal is to educate both pet parents and readers about the cost of vet care, and how pet insurance can help mitigate those bills. For example, research shows that one in three pets will need urgent vet care every year, and furthermore, every six seconds, a pet parent is given a vet bill of more than $1,0001. By researching what is most commonly bringing pets to the vet, pet parents can determine what the true cost of pet health care will be for their own furry household.
