SEATTLE, Sept. 12, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Two students were awarded scholarships to help with their college tuition, courtesy of academic scholarships from Healthy Paws Pet Insurance – the #1 customer-rated provider of insurance for both dogs and cats. Both recipients work tirelessly as advocates for the health and welfare of animals, logging crucial volunteering hours all while maintaining an honors status.
"Healthy Paws not only actively supports rescues and nonprofit organizations, we also actively help the next generation's veterinary leaders and animal advocates," says Rob Jackson, co-founder and CEO of Healthy Paws Pet Insurance. "It was difficult to choose only two, but Charlotte and Carolyn were exemplary and very gifted. We're excited to see where their passions take them."
The Animal Advocate Scholarship is designated for a student with significant volunteer experience enrolled in an accredited institution in the United States, and the Veterinary Student Scholarship is designated for a student enrolled in an accredited vet medicine program in the United States. Recipients are chosen based on educational merits and extracurricular dedication to improving animal welfare.
Fall 2018 Recipients
Carolyn Hynes, Animal Advocate Scholarship recipient, is currently pursuing veterinary medicine at Clemson University in Clemson, South Carolina. She's passionately committed to animal welfare, citing a few instances where she worked to de-escalate aggressive dogs as a volunteer, fostered animals, and ran an art auction to benefit local rescues. Her future mission will be heavily centered around spay/neuter programs.
"I am incredibly honored to have received the Animal Advocate Scholarship. I have always had a strong love for animals and helped rescue pets to the best of my ability," says Carolyn. "I am thrilled to be able to use this scholarship to help pay for my schooling and continue to help animals within my community."
Charlotte Burns, Veterinary Student Scholarship recipient, is enrolled in the veterinary medicine program at the University of Pennsylvania. An active volunteer at the Penn Vet Shelter Medicine Club (found at the Philadelphia Animal Welfare Society Shelter), Charlotte has discovered the challenges of saving pets, and has since honed her focus to emergency veterinary medicine.
"Veterinary school is becoming increasingly difficult to pay for with the loss of Perkins loans, high interest rates, and even the risk of losing programs such as Public Service Loan Forgiveness," explains Charlotte. "Scholarships such as this one remind me that professionals in our field support one another and motivate me to continue to better this profession."
Healthy Paws is now accepting scholarship applications for the Spring 2019 semester. The application deadline is November 30, 2018. Applications can be submitted online at https://www.healthypawspetinsurance.com/academic-scholarships.
