HealthMap Co-Founder And Prominent Epidemiologist Dr. John Brownstein To Deliver Keynote At 2014 mHealth Summit Focused On Ebola Outbreak, Epidemics And Public Health Surveillance
HealthMap software spotted the Ebola epidemic 9 days before the WHO announced it
WASHINGTON, Oct. 22, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- The mHealth Summit today announced that John Brownstein, PhD, Director, Computational Epidemiology Group, Boston Children's Hospital, Associate Professor, Department of Pediatrics, Harvard Medical School, and Co-Founder of HealthMap, will deliver a keynote address at the 6th annual Summit on December 10. The mHealth Summit is the largest global conference and expo focused on the intersection of mobile/wireless and healthcare delivery, taking place December 7-11 at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center in the Washington, D.C. area.
HealthMap is a global leader in using online informal sources for disease outbreak monitoring and real-time surveillance of emerging public health threats. It was established in 2006 by Dr. Brownstein and his team at Boston Children's Hospital. The HealthMap software spotted the West African Ebola epidemic nine days before the World Health Organization (WHO) announced it, triggering a global response.
HealthMap works by bringing together disparate data sources, including online news aggregators, eyewitness reports, expert-curated discussions and validated official reports, to create a profile of the current global state of infectious diseases and their effect on human and animal health. HealthMap is used by a variety of organizations including state and local public health agencies, the WHO, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control.
"The mHealth Summit could not have a more timely or relevant keynote than Dr. Brownstein's presentation on the use of online data sources and automated systems for monitoring, organizing data and visualizing global epidemics," said Richard Scarfo, Director, mHealth Summit, and Vice President, Personal Connected Health Alliance. "With current, growing concerns regarding disease outbreaks, Dr. Brownstein will highlight how medical informatics can accelerate public health surveillance and, importantly, put that knowledge into practice to monitor emerging public health threats."
New at this year's Summit is the two-day Global mHealth Forum, presented in partnership with the mHealth Working Group and USAID, focusing on mobile and connected health in low and middle income countries.
mHealth Summit convenes domestic and international thought leaders in healthcare, technology and industry, government officials, researchers, advocates and investors to advance the use of mobile and connected health tools and facilitate their integration into healthcare delivery. It is part of the newly formed Personal Connected Health Alliance; an international non-profit established by Continua, mHealth Summit and HIMSS to represent the consumer voice in personal connected health.
